I really don't see them keeping the "natives" out of there, but if that's what they want I will stay away.

Had an awesome day at Pickett on the trails with Curt from the logging company! Unfortunately they own basically the heart of Pickett including carpenter's rock but this could be a good thing it may help change their minds about closing the land due to all the traffic and landmarks. We tried to make a loop around Pickett with existing trails but it could not be done without crossing their land due to them owning parts of trail 1 and trail 3 which are a couple of the main trails. We had a great ride with only one flat tire (big horn) and one broken axle (a brand new rhino brand)! Hopefully we will be making another ride back soon for more exploring!

Maybe we can explore and see if there is a way to connect the trails back together without getting on them or maybe they will at least leave the connecting trails open.

Well, maybe something will work out, I will still respect the land owners and not ride there until told different. I might sell out and take up Goat Herding anyway.

Rode yesterday in area between Rt. 90 and 686. There are also trails between 686 and 200 I have road. These are some how accessible from 200 ( sunny brook ) area. Not sure who owns this but riding there has never been a problem. It certainly isn't Pickett, but there are some nice trails. I guess my point is we maybe able to ride some of Pickett and some of these trails as well. All from sunny brook. I'm sure someone more familiar with these trails may have more info and/or thoughts about this. Just my 2 cents.

OK, I have been doing some investigating...  Turns out Pickett was sold to TFG LLC (Cumberland Forrestlands) by the same group that owns 900+ acres that borders my farm... Cumberland Woodlands LLC, Stanford. (Ward Forrest Correll, Somerset KY)  Here are some sources of information many of you may find interesting and helpful.  I have attempted some map overlays and have found much of "Pickett" can still be enjoied without trespassing upon TFG LLC property.  Some 2600 acres in one tract alone. Many others over 800 acres.  I will be up for an exploring ride any Sunday.  Please explore the links below for yourselves.

Hey guys, sorry about the lapse in response time on here. I've been meaning to clear up some of the questions about if Pickett or parts of it will remain open or not. I don't like to be the bringer of bad news, but the managers of the property do not want to allow for recreational riding to occur on the properties they have and the Pickett area as well as surrounding areas owned by the same group are included. Anyone on the properties who aren't on a hunting lease to be there are trespassing by law.

As I have said before, the concerns the owners have are the liability issues if and when people get hurt riding on their property as well as the condition of the trails. As I read on another post on the forum discussing the car hauler, the trails at one point used to be completely accessible by pickup truck and I've heard from locals that 2wd was all you needed. Whether or not that is true I can not say, but the trails used to be in much better shape than they are now. Albeit maybe they're more fun and challenging to ride on now, they're also much more dangerous. As being the manager of the property, I don't feel safe driving the trails by myself on four wheeler to inspect the tract and do my job because of the state the trails are in. And we have now been contacted by adjacent landowners who would be affected by the decision to "shut off" the trails, and they have the same concerns we do with liability and access to property, as well as concern over vandalism to their own properties which has been an issue. So they too would like to see the riding come to an end.

And yes I can try and provide a map of the trails in relation to TFG properties to help give a better idea of the affected trails and areas that are no longer available to be rode on. I can say that carpenters rockhouse, the areas all around the preaching ground, mill point, areas near Edwards mountain, areas near slickford, the trails leading to the hippy cabin, teacup cliff, brokedown cliff, millsap mountain, Ferrell cliff and wolf cliff are among the areas not permissible to riding.

I have been trying to keep the trails and land managed by TFG well posted, and especially near Pickett where a lot of the riding occurs but it has been tough. It seems like the yellow signs I put up are tore off the trees as fast as I put them up, which I don't quite understand the reasoning behind. I don't believe it is anyone on here, but if anyone hears of this happening please tell them to stop. I do check the properties, it's my job, and I will keep re-posting signs even if it is aggravating.

Again I wish I didn't have to be the bringer of the bad news, but it is not my decision to not allow riding. It is the owners and managers of the properties. I will try to respond to any questions sooner next time around, as well as get some useful maps posted up. Thanks again for being willing to respect our decisions and for not getting out of line over the situation. If the decision ever changes about riding on the property, I will be sure to post on here immediately.

Thanks again,
Curt

I completely understand the decision, and will comply but to ease your worries I talked to the local Game warden last week and he said as long as property has posted signs stating no trespassing if some one got hurt they would be trespassing and the land owner would not be responsible for the hurt individual. However the injured person could sue (like anything else) but would be wasting his time and money because he would have no case in court as long as he was trespassing. This is a Tennessee Game Warden so I am not sure how Kentucky law is, hopefully the same.

Also what are the plans to close the land? Will it be patrolled? Gates? ETC. Or just signs?

Yeah I would expect the law to be similar here in KY but I'd have to check. And the plan will be to try and keep signs posted up, put up gates where necessary to still allow access for us and landowners with legal rights to go thru, and most likely block trails off at areas that aren't access points we can use like the trails coming in from TN. And no it won't be patrolled, but will be monitored by myself, hunt lessees, surrounding landowners, etc. I realize people will still trespass, will be angry, will vandalize property, and so on but we can not simply stake out on every property trying to stop it all.

Ran into a group of 12-15 units at Monticello Walmart today heading out to ride. Guess where they were going ? Yep Pickett. Without trying to be a know it all I tried to explain to them the current situation. They were totally un aware of recent news. Now I'm sure they have planned this ride for a while. I just think there are so many people that have no idea what is going on. I hope as people learn, that they respect the new rules and I also hope that they are gradually enforced. I wished them a safe and enjoyable ride.

Too many unanswered questions and way too many uninformed people that have ridden there for years. Going to be a slow painful process.

Just my 2 cents.

Also met a group last weekend at a gas station that were heading to Pickett. I asked them if they had heard about the closure. One guy responded, " sure but, we've been riding that area for years, not gonna stop now. "

If you don't get on the internet and read forums your probably not going to know it is closed. I got my first riding info on Pickett by emailing Pickett state park. I found the most useful info on here and I'm sure that is why the timber company has focused it's attention here on trying to close it.
