Changing bearings! Empty
PostSubject: Changing bearings!   Changing bearings! EmptySat Jun 12, 2010 12:46 am

When changing the bearings on a rhino or basically any other Yamaha independent suspension machine (plus the front on Yamaha solid axle machines) you will find the bearings have to be knocked out from the inside of the hub due to a bearing stop machined into the hub assembly (this maybe true for some other manufacturers but I don't know).

You have a few options to removing these bearings... Including:

Option #1
You can drive them out with a hammer and punch (and/or chisel) but it can be a time consuming process(not to mention the cursing) but can be done if you are patient.
Option #2
You can weld a steel rod to the bearing and use the rod to drive the bearing out...easy if you have a welder....
Option #3
With a blind bearing puller you just tighten the puller in one of the bearings and drive it out using a punch and a hammer(makes a difficult job easy)... Once the first bearing is out you can use a punch (or whatever) to drive the other bearing out. Be careful not to lose the spacer that goes between the two bearing....

Once you have the bearings out you can grind down the outer radius of one of the bearing (making it small enough to fit easily inside the hub) and use it to drive in the new bearings..

Another quick tip is to put the bearings in the freezer for a few hours before the install. Cold temps makes metal contract making the bearings smaller and easier to drive in...

Been there, if you wait till they get real back they knock out pretty easy but when mine get a little play I try to change them. The allballs bearings this last time didn't make it 200 miles.

We just changed a front wheel bearing on a Polarise XP 900. We used the brute force method to get it out. When we when to the dealer he gave a tip that you haven't mentioned above. Heat the entire assembly with a torch or put it on an electric hot plate. When to bearing seals start to smoke it should be hot enough to hit it out. Do the same before putting the new bearing in and put the bearing in the freezer like mentioned b4. Ours fell in without any effort. I was about to buy a press but now don't need it.

On the grizz, we drove them out with a socket, had the dealer press them back in, they did for free, did not know the freezor idea, bought a bearing driver puller and pusher deal at harbor freight, can't wait to use it..

Does anyone have a pic of the blind bearing puller? I pulled up quite a few different ones on Google.
